Bye Bye Boobies?

Sorry, couldn’t help that, given the pronouncement from Vogue that is being picked up by all the news outlets, both conventional and fashion:

Vogue announces the end of cleavage: It’s over

In an article titled “Desperately Seeking Cleavage,” the magazine says, “The cleavage – those magnificent mounds pushed together to display sexual empowerment, to seduce, to inspire lust or even just to show off – is over, or at least, taking a well-earned break.”

What is taking the long-lasting style staple? Exposed shoulders, stomach or legs.

If it’s true that we will all be spared the boobage of women young and old over the next year’s fashion cycle, then I’m all for that!

Will I now be able to make a Target run with being assaulted by the breast brigade? Saggy breasts! Tattooed breasts! High breasts, low breasts, new breasts, old breasts.Fake breasts, fat breasts, and pushed up flat breasts!

The mass coverage will be a welcome change.

Of course, I’m not at all certain how women showing off shoulders, stomach, and legs is any less sexually charged than breasts. I have a leg man, after all.

This also poses a personal dilemma. I have a blouse I was planning on wearing out to the movies with the man this weekend which hangs off the shoulders.

Except I loathe being trendy. Perhaps in this case I’m cutting edge?

  1. Just changing fashion. If you’ll dial yourself back to the early 90s, you’ll remember microminis and bulky tops.

And fashion VERY rarely dials itself into the People of Walmart very quickly.

  2. I just find cleavage a bit tacky, personally. Not my thing. It’s also boring and obvious and looks like a butt – kind of like plumber’s butt in your face all day. We all have them; it’s not special.

  3. Hey now, not all of us have legs. Give a girl her spotlight… 😀

Well, tragic fashion is going to get more tragic. Am I the only one who forgot all the middle-aged spread in boxy shirts and shorts? The tunics which would not die – even on the legless wonders like yours truly? We might even see (brace yourselves, girls) a return to ….shoulder pads….

People of Wal-mart will be seen in see-through boxy shirts or cropped shirts over tight pants. Works on the young and fit, doesn’t work on anyone else. You will see it on everyone else. It will bad.

The 90s (which we are heading into a repeat of, fashionwise) also brought bike shorts and running bras as acceptable street wear, with the fashionista adding that boxy shirt over top. Do you people NOT remember why the mantra, “spandex is a privilege, not a right” was born???

I saw bodysuits at the mall yday.

  4. I’m already fatigued at the picture accompanying this post. It’s funny how quickly flash just looks banal. If it had been a picture of a woman tastefully dressed, I don’t think the effect would be the same. What on earth is going on with that one in the middle? o_O

I’m all for wearing whatever the hell you want, but the exposed boobs get tiresome.
